Port Stanley Minor Hockey

As I’m sure you have heard, the province will be moving back into grey effective midnight Friday for a minimum of 28 days.
This will end our hockey season.

Not exactly the ending we were hoping for, but I am proud of the quality and quantity of hockey we were able to provide throughout this frustrating season.  While not having games vs other associations made some feel like it wasn’t real hockey, I was impressed with the level of competition in the scrimmages I observed and I am confident in saying that our players had fun, improved and appreciated the effort of the executive, coaches, arena staff and municipality for everything they did to make it happen.

I wanted to take a few moments to thank some of the key people and organizations that helped us make the most of a difficult hockey season.

Candice Wakulich – Our registrar, emergency second U15 coach and team sponsor.  I rely on your organization and commitment to getting it right every season, but this year your role was even more critical.  Thank-you for your diligence in making sure we are always in compliance with regulations, for providing a voice of experienced reason when issues arise and tolerating the rest of us who need constant reminders to get things done.

Jean Devine – Our Treasurer.  I actually told her it was, “a simple, straightforward job, that declined in workload as the season went on!”  Thank-you for providing detailed financial statements, updated refund totals…weekly and for tolerating those who don’t follow deadlines!

Shelley Boyes – For always being so positive, organized and willing to go the extra mile.  No matter what was going on your energy and enthusiasm for making this the best season possible helped pull me out of a personal funk when everything around us was so negative.  Making the “Van Delivery” to the foodbank helped provide we with the perspective I needed to get through and otherwise tough holiday period.

To our coaches – Those who have coached before did not get anything close to the experience they expected and new/emergency coaches that were required due to smaller rosters had little time to prepare.  However, when I was at the arena and saw all those smiling faces, the close scores and the effort in the scrimmages I grew impressed and proud with what we were able to put together.

The Municipality of Central Elgin – I have always felt we had a more engaged, customer focused arena and facility management team than many of the communities around us.  This year I learned that council itself also looks out for us and listened to our input in making the difficult decision to stay open as long as we could.  We were one of the first Minor Hockey Associations on the ice in the fall and the last to come off this spring, our health and safety protocols ensured we had no outbreaks and our members benefited from the regular physical activity, friendship and competition that hockey provides.

To our sponsors – I know many of you are small business (Wellington Street Family Dentistry, Herms Sports Exchange) or service clubs (Port Stanley Lions Club, Port Stanley Lioness Club, Port Stanley Optimist Club, Port Stanly Royal Canadian Legion) that had significant revenue challenges this past year.  Our regular corporate donors (Greenlane Environmental, Tim Horton’s, McDonalds, Canadian Tire Jump Start, Lace Em Up, Esso) came through in a big way, but Shedden Tractor Pull and Easter Broomball fell victim to COVID, but are planning to come back strong next year.  There were also some very unexpected anonymous donors this year – you know who you are, we are lucky to live in such a great supportive community!

Be safe, get vaccinated and see you at the AGM (I hope),

Alex Russell,

President, PSMHA

Small town hockey at its Finest!

Season Extension

The big smiles, red faces and sounds of kids having fun have been a welcome change from the dreary grey that has been “Our COVID Year.”  I am pleased to share that the Municipality of Central Elgin has agreed to delay the removal of the ice until April 19, so the executive have voted to extend the season to April 18.  We will continue with skills, practices and scrimmages right through to that date…as long as we stay orange or better.  Vaccinations have begun in our area, but case counts have started to rise so our return to play plan remains very fragile.  As a result, the executive have decided not to accept any players from associations whose programming has ended, will not permit games against other centers, and will not be scheduling any year end team events.  Although disappointing, we felt it was better to prioritize the preservation of our core activities.  Please continue to complete your daily wellness check and stay away if you not feeling well.

PSMHA Owned Equipment/Supplies

Please return any/all PSMHA owned jerseys, goalie, trainer equipment as soon as possible.  You are welcome to use required items during your scheduled ice time, but returning them now will reduce the likelihood of items being stranded if we unexpectantly go into lockdown.

Final Gap Refund Check Pick Up Day

The final day for pick up will be on Saturday March 27th between 1-1:30pm in the foyer of the arena. If you are unable to make it, please arrange for someone else to pick it up and provide [email protected] with their name in advance.  You will not be chased, any unclaimed checks will be converted to credits for the 21-22 hockey season.  This will allow for the timely completion of our year end financials.

Our Annual General Meeting will be held at the Port Stanley Arena on May 18 7:00 pm.  Please take this opportunity to get involved to keep PSMHA the best small town hockey experience in our area!  There will be several vacancies on the Board, including the newly established position of Director of Volunteer Coordination.  Positions Descriptions are available on the website under the About PSMHA tab/PSMHA Constitution link, I would be happy to go over any questions you may have.

If you would like to bring a motion forward at the AGM, please submit it to [email protected] before April 18, 2021.

Referee School

The traditional 3 day OMHA Referee School will NOT be going ahead in September of 2021. With the ongoing COVID pandemic, hotel stays and many bodies in a small area just don’t make sense.  However, we are planning for a reopening next season and want to ensure we have enough qualified referees to do so.  The referee school will be moving the clinic to the Elgin - Middlesex region to make it easier to get the candidates to the clinic.  If you were born in 2006 or earlier you are eligible for a full PSMHA scholarship.  We have 3 spots available.  If you are interested in attending, please send an email to [email protected] before May 15 2021.

Shooter Bob has reached out to remind parents that anyone who ordered $25 or more worth of photos is entitled to a free electronic version of their pictures.  To claim it, all you need to do is email a request with the player name and team to [email protected]

Keep safe,

Alex Russell, President PSMHA
