NOT ALL HOCKEY LESSONS COME FROM A PRACTICE OR GAME

Hockey is a sport that teaches more than passing the puck or where to be on the ice. From being a good teammate to learning about respect, hockey is just as much about what lessons are brought forward on the ice as being a better person when you’re not wearing skates. While parents aren’t involved with what happens during a game or practice, they can still help shape their child’s time playing hockey. Off the ice, there are many lessons to be taught that still tie into the hockey experience. Here’s what parents can do to help raise a young hockey player.

The summer is the perfect time of the year to wind down and refresh following a busy hockey season. It gives players, coaches and parents a chance to decompress and take hockey off of their minds for a bit before getting ready to do it all over again.

It also serves as a great stage to spend on reflection of all the positives from the past season. Celebrate what your team did and work on coming up with a plan to motivate and continue the improvement that the players have made. Nobody knows the roster better than the coach. Bringing in new teaching methods will add to the leadership lessons you already provide.

The Ontario Hockey Federation (OHF), the governing body for OMHA has released a new online course that ALL Bench Staff must take.

If you are coaching a team this coming season or intend to help as an Assistnt Coach, Trainer, or Manager, Please be aware that you must complete this new online course before you can be approved on a team roster.

The new online course is:  Understanding Discrimination based on Gender Identity and Gender Expression Training for Team Officials
